  1. Apples storage pricing is absurdly high BECAUSE they want you dependent on cloud storage. It’s the slow bleed and maintains forced brand loyalty of the average person.

  2. End to end encryption is the wrong word
YES, your data are encrpted from your device to the cloud, end to end
    Its called secure folder
    Or zero knowledge encryption

Included with OpenDrive with the paid plan

  3. I’ll stick with Proton Drive. I don’t really backup any photos, and mostly just need to back up data. Proton Drive and Cryptomator work very well together for even more security and encryption. On top of that I’m already very deep into the Proton ecosystem and use Proton Mail, and Proton VPN as well.

  4. I’ve used all the mentioned services until I finally found the right service. iDrive is without any doubt the best service I’ve used. It’s a true storage solution. All the other options mentioned are cloud backups and not cloud storage. With iDrive, I know if I delete a file mistakenly, I can recover it safely.

  5. If you are just looking at photo storage, and if you are an amazon prime member, then they offer unlimited photo storage for free which includes 5gb storage for video as well!

  6. What do you think of the European based pCloud? It offers lifetime storage prices so you don’t have monthly fees.

  7. Unfortunately, quantum computing is going to mean the end of all encryption. 😢

  8. 🤠I have Google Drive and a fiber optic cable internet connection to my house. The upload is painfully slow, but the biggest problem is that it does not have an incremental upload-backup feature. Thus if I want to upload multiple files from different folders I have to upload whole folders with a large amount of data which does not need to be replaced on the cloud.

  9. I like Apple, for the end to end encryption and how well it’s integrated into the Apple ecosystem. So far, 2 TB has been more than enough for the family. $10/month still seems pricey though.

  10. I chose to build myself a home server / NAS to replace iCloud just to realize that I should probably keep one of these for an offsite backup anyways lol. I don’t regret it though since I can pick and choose what to actually backup to the cloud and whether I want it encrypted or not no matter which cloud service I choose. Plus it was a fun project

  11. Please stop saying iCloud is a storage service , Icloud is a syncing service. It doesn’t store anything, if you delete photos and videos off your phone when it gets full, they will also be deleted from the iCloud. No back up, unless you have a storage service linked to your phone or devices.

  12. I’m surprised you didn’t mention pCloud. I’ve been a customer for years and super happy with them.

  13. MEGA. 20GB free, no file size restrictions, add more free storage by using app, inviting friends etc. the only restriction is 5GB upload limit per day.

  14. Sadly I didn’t check my advance data protection on my iPhone, alas Kier and his cronies can access all my skulduggery should they feel the need to do so. I have 1tb of storage on onedrive with my 365 subscription so I use that, and my Mac plays nicely with one drive. I also feel it is always useful to not lock everything into one walled vault such as iCloud. Should I ever wish to completely evacuate the apple eco system (which I have danced with just lately using a Samsung phone for a while and actually quite enjoyed the experience) at least I have all my docs already stored on a multi platform facility.

  15. Very surprised that you didn’t include pCloud in the mix for this comparison as you have covered it before. I know there are many other services too, (icedrive, mega, etc) and you have to make the cutoff somewhere, but is there a reason pCloud didn’t make the cut this time?

  16. Another thing some people might want to consider, is where the servers are located. I believe all the ones you mentioned, except Sync have physical locations in US. Sync is in Canada

  17. As an Android and Apple user, I’m paying both Google and Apple for cloud storage 🫩 I do use my Amazon prime account for photos, but that is more of an added convenience/backup. Next up will be setting up an 8 or 16 TB enclosed SSD. I’ve been looking and will probably buy in the next couple of months. Great video Pete

  18. Great video Pete. Look forward to the next one on SSDs. Looking for recent options for those. Also, why are you still in the UK? Leave while you can man.

  19. The cloud provider dont have the key to decrypt you data
Nothing to do with end to end encryption
Your data are encryption in transfer over the internet, from your device to the cloud end

No end to end encryption is like SMS, everyone can see the clear data, and change the data in transfer

  20. You are saying
Banks doesn’t use end to end encryption
Banks doesn’t use zero knowledge encryption
Apple removed zero knowledge encryption in the UK, the same

    Thats false information
99% of the internet today are encrypted, from your device to the service your are using (end to end)
Like YouTube, see the lock in your browser

  21. Super helpful breakdown—especially for anyone deciding between security, speed, or sheer storage size. Love that you touched on the real-world usability too. We’ve been using Next3 Offload to seamlessly integrate WordPress with external media and cloud storage (works with 20+ providers!), and this video helped us narrow down the best option for our setup.

  22. Synology Drive 😎 But in all seriousness, for non self-hosted, Proton Drive has been amazing. My whole family switched over to it because the search functionality of OneDrive and Google Drive was so broken. We love it!

  23. Very useful comparison. Three months ago, I bought an ASUS NUC 14 Pro, equipped with two NVMe drives, each 2TB, and a storage box on Hetzner. I’m using a self-hosted Immich instance to store my photos and videos, and Nextcloud for storing my files. I back them up periodically to the Hetzner storage box — obviously encrypted — and I also keep a third backup on my iCloud, just to be absolutely sure I’ll never lose them.
