The American Express Coinbase One Card: Worth It or Just Hype?
The new Coinbase One Card, issued on the Amex network, is shaking up the cashback and crypto rewards space. With up to 4% back in Bitcoin—but only if you meet the asset under management (AUM) thresholds—it’s drawing comparisons to the Robinhood Gold Card and Bank of America’s Platinum Honors setup. In this deep dive, we break down how the card works, who it’s for, how the AUM tiers likely work, and what to watch out for (hint: “membership fees” and “not your keys, not your coins”).

We’ll also cover how it stacks up against top competitors like:

– Robinhood Gold Card – 3% back and easy treasury plays
– Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite – 3.28% back towards travel with Platinum Honors
– U.S. Bank Smartly™ Card – Launched with hype, but faded fast

  1. If you buy $500 of Bitcoin a month, you’re saving money by having the basic membership plan. Buying Bitcoin has fees, and if you buy $500 a month in Bitcoin then you’re saving money a lot by spending $4 a month on the basic plan rather than paying the fees associated with buying $500 of bitcoin. So the membership pays for itself as long as you buy $500 a month. Then, the card is free.

To me, this will be the most valuable card ever created. Even at the lowest tier of 2% cash back, we idolize “2% cash back on all purchase” cards. This can be 4% on all. But even at 2%, your 2% cash back to pay off your CC statement is cool and all, or converting that 2% to points for maybe a 4 cpp redemption (if you’re VERY good at transfer partners and lucky), is great, but that 2% bitcoin will grow to exponentially more value than any points redemption will net you.

    This card is insanely powerful

  2. I have been a loyal AMEX cardholder for over 45 years, and a Platinum Cardholder since 1985. For decades, holding an American Express Platinum Card represented more than just a payment tool—it symbolized exclusivity, prestige, and an unparalleled level of service. It was a badge of honor, a statement that you belonged to a select group of individuals who valued luxury and excellence. Unfortunately, in recent years, I have observed a decline in the standards and benefits that once set American Express apart, leading me to feel that the brand has lost touch with its core audience and its long-standing legacy.

A troubling trend I’ve noticed is that many of the high-end retailers and service providers I have frequented for years no longer accept American Express. My local authorized dealers for Rolex, Vacheron, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet, as well as luxury brands like Hermès, Cartier, Loro Piana, and Brunello Cucinelli, no longer accept AMEX. Even top-tier restaurants, once loyal to Platinum Cardholders, have started to distance themselves. As a result, I now find myself using my Chase Visa to complete transactions at places that once proudly accepted my AMEX. This is a stark contrast to the days when the American Express Platinum was universally respected and welcomed at the finest establishments.

Additionally, I know several fellow Centurion cardholders who are experiencing the same frustrations. Many of us can no longer use our cards at certain high-end retailers, and luxury resorts, which once welcomed the Centurion card with open arms, now seem indifferent or unaware of its significance. Worse still, Sales Associates (SAs) in many luxury establishments are either unfamiliar with the Platinum or Centurion cards or, in some cases, do not fully understand the prestige they once carried. This lack of recognition and understanding diminishes the experience and value that should come with holding such a card.

Furthermore, the current offerings from American Express, such as the recent coupon book, feel inappropriately “mass-market” and lack the sophistication one would expect from a brand that once catered exclusively to its most affluent customers. The rewards structure has also become less lucrative and user-friendly, leaving many longtime members questioning the value of their card.

The luxury hotels and resorts that once provided exceptional care to Platinum and Centurion Cardholders now seem indifferent. Moreover, many other credit card companies have introduced similar, if not better, perks, making it difficult for American Express to maintain its competitive edge. The exclusivity and high-caliber service that were once hallmarks of AMEX seem to be fading, and with it, the prestige that once made this brand so desirable.

As a loyal, long-time member, it is disheartening to witness such a decline. I believe American Express has strayed from its roots—roots that once offered unparalleled benefits, service, and access for its high-end clientele. I hope that American Express will take these concerns seriously and return to its commitment to offering a truly exceptional luxury experience, one that reflects the brand’s storied history and reputation.

Perhaps, to restore some of the exclusivity that has been lost, AMEX could consider introducing a new card tier between the Platinum and Centurion cards. This could help redefine the distinction between different levels of membership, ensuring that those who seek the highest levels of service and benefits receive what they deserve.

  3. Thanks Sebby,
How does deleteme compare to aura and incogni?

I’ve been getting so much spam calls, will deleteme help with that?

  4. Well, can’t really compare Robinhood to anything since you can’t actually apply for it really. If I ever get off of the waitlist I’m sure I’d be happy to use it.

  5. I would love this card only if the minimums are low enough. Because I already have the Robinhood credit card and the Gemini credit card, having them alongside each other is my favorite combo, but I’d prefer Coinbase over RH and Gemini if I could at least get to the 3% threshold. However, it seems like a lot of hassle, and not to mention, AMEX is still not accepted in rural areas around me.

If we can get that 4% back, it would be awesome and it would simplify my wallet setup too:

    Coinbase CC
    AMEX BCP
    BILT

  6. Amex announced earlier today that they are revamping the Platinum card. Do you think the annual fee will go to $1,000?

  7. getting a coinbase card means each time you get cashback (every transaction) must be reported when you do taxes because you are paid back in crypto. I had the original coinbase 2% card. this means you have to buy crypto tax software when tax time comes because you arent gonna manually calculate the price of the bitcoin at every transaction’s time, so thats an additional $99-399 depending on how many transactions you have in the year. everyone should be aware of that it adds alot of complications during tax time

  8. its wild, everyone who i knew called bitcoin a scam, now its being backed by credit card company’s and hedge corps & others are also buying it up..

  9. 🔑 I make $2M/year and I’m still very into credit card points. I can’t imagine making $10M/year, but I suspect that I’d still be into credit card points.

  10. that was a great ad transition. and not force at all, since the crypto robbers targeting based on internet information is a real, serious issue

  11. 🔑 Hey Sebby, can you do a video about the Gemini CC? I recently got approved for it and think it’s not talked about enough. Kind of similar to an Apple Card in several ways.

  12. 🔑 can’t wait to see your video on the updated CSR! I think even if my NW was over 5 million dollars, I still would care about points because it’s fun and interesting but I wouldn’t let the lack of points stop me from doing what I want.

  13. Sebby, are you alive? The biggest news in the credit card points world re: CSR and not a peep from you. Your channel has been sucking for the past year now.
