  1. Hi Linds. In the UK there is an app called Borrowbox, very similar to Libby but better. I don’t know if you can get it in the USA but thought I would let you know. Again via the local library.

  2. Why is it always a woke white woman?
FYI: 1984 went public domain and is free. Research first. Why do political tribalsts take everything at face value with out sourcing it out first.

If you think on thy why of that, you will start to understand how you’re being manipulated.

  3. I’m coming to the realisation that I jumped ship too late and won’t be able to move any of my 1000+ books from Kindle to Kobo. I will just have to repurchase. Small price to pay for getting away from Amazon, I suppose.

  4. Ok lets talk why Amazon is bad.

They essentially have monopolies in ebooks (90%+), audio books (most are only on audible), ecomic books (they bought comixology several years ago).

When an ebook is sold amazon takes 70% of sale.

There is still a way to get your books downloaded. Doing this you pop the DRM and save them

  5. None of the “downsides” matter to me anymore. If i find myself starting to think about amazon, I immediately ignore that thought, and look for a different solution. Done with amazon

  6. Kindle and its services are fine. But I really liked thus colored device. Speaking of a digital library we need to have a different approach but is weird to let hundreds of Kindle content away for a new and certainly better device.

  7. Thank you for purchasing Kobo, a Canadian company. (I have no affiliations).
Amazon is a bad company across the board. Here in Canada Amazon wanted to have addresses where it could deliver its merch for people to pick-up. They bought a relatively high-end chain of grocery store so they could put pick-up boxes in them. Part of the sales agreement was the stores would remain open & the prices would not go up and quality of the food would not change.
    Well, they circumvented that:
1- the quality did not change (or not much) but there is no choices available anymore, one type of mustard, one type of capers, a few types of fish etc.
2- the price did not change but the size changed, instead of getting 100g of "xyz" veggies for 5$ you get 70g for 5$…
    etc.
One thing you did not mentioned about kindle, is that their service agreement (is highway robbery, yes, but) after you signed the agreement they can still change the it if they so please… Along with everything else that is wrong with Jeff Bezos.
    Amazon is the worst.

  8. Thanks for this! I’m leaving Kindle, Amazon, Whole Foods, the Washington Post, etc. because of Bezos sucking up to Trump. Kindle was just fine for me but he ruined it.

  9. I obviously will not be able to afford any device. I am a retired teacher, with lots of expenses, and need all my extra cash for everyday needs.😔

  10. Where I live, unfortunately, the only way to purchase a Kobo is from AliExpress and it is EXPENSIVE. Converting, it would be something about $500 without shipment and taxes, which would raise it up to $700 at least. Kindle here is still the best option because it is the only one we have locally and at an affordable price.

  11. Being from Belgium, the choice is easy: Kobo all the way.
I have been using both Kindle and Kobo devices since the beginning.
I don’t trust US companies anymore and I support Canada.
And as a bonus, in my opinion, Kobo has technically always been ahead of Kindle.

  12. I’ve been part of Kobo since before they started. For real. A book store called Boarders first did the e-book thing late and when they left, my license was transferred to Kobo. My only complaint with them is they don’t really give any previews. I tried the same book on both Kindle and Kobo. Kindle did better. If Kobo did better, I would no longer be with Kindle.

  13. Get rid of the cat and get with the information of why you no longer use your kindle. I gave you a thumbs down

  14. I also lost a book that I purchased from Amazon when they decided they didn’t like the content any more. It’s not that Amazon “lost the license”, they just don’t like the book’s content. I paid Amazon for the book about 10 years ago, and it was on my old Kindle for years. Then I upgraded to a new Kindle a few years ago, but I could not put that particular book onto the new Kindle. Since Amazon’s ridiculous T&Cs allow this, no refund was offered or provided. The book in question was Esther Vilar’s “The Manipulated Man”.

  15. I use Samsung tablet and kindle app (i like the size for reading)- it tracks what I read, the %, how much is left etc.

  16. i recent found lot of clips like your, goodbye Amazon. After watching your clip, thank a lot for this VDO, i will follow your new device instead. This device is under my consideration, plan to purchase soon. I currently own Kobo Aura HD, just recently receiving update after years of using.

  17. That will definitely be my next e reader for sure just because I like that it’s more customizable has color and overall more features. I don’t mind the kindle that much only because I don’t actually buy any books I just use libby! 😂 It really sucks for the people that lost their books though!!! 😢

  18. They can’t take your books if you don’t turn your wifi on. Of course, you can’t get more books, but if you’re not planning on it.

  19. I base my move away from Kindle on delusions and hallucinations. Hear me out. I have had quite a bit of head ache with first party software. Like for example Apple’s default iOS music player no longer plays much of my legally ripped CD mp3s and flacs. And starving app writers found ostensibly also found out no one buys music playing apps so none of them had been updated in years–they just are bugged left and right.

Kindle specifically? My Kindle just gathered dust b/c of two things: 1) Amazon forces me to email an email address to "load a PDF book" to read; 2) the device is kinda locked in it seems, I have zero option to use a 3rd party PDF reader; 3) the e-ink display updated so slowly, which is a huge struggle b/c I am always panning b/c the view square is for sure smaller than the actual size of the PDF book page I am reading (which is either non-fiction book size–or less often letter size or A4, as you know).

So it just got to be point that I started hallucinating that I would be instantly unhappy if I had to use another Kindle. And I had been following the e-ink story since it was invented by Magnovox/Oxford in UK. Back when they thought they invented e-ink so that farmers from all over the planet had free internet.

But here we are, year after year, and it seems it’s mainly this Thinkpad of tablets for middle-managers. Or strictly for novel reading. I just read far too much "fake books", aka non-fiction technical manuals, to be the right audience.

But I can’t just go for a tablet either. B/c most tablets are either budget, and have atrociously subpar screen and anti-glare. Or are just as easy to be water-damaged as laptops. So I just bide my time, hoping for some tiny usability/ownership revolution.

Well, finally toward the end of 2024 I realized that the non-fiction "fake book" reading device is finally sorta here in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+, it was water resistant, so my rainy city of Vancouver–or a water bottle–wouldn’t destroy the thousand dollar device. It had the same anti-glare as the Samsung flagship phone, so it has a snowflake’s chance in hell of being somewhat pleasant on the eye to read things with in day time. And it’s Android.. so I could just load up any 3rd party ebook reader, for epub, markdown, pdf, you name it, there’s a reader for it. So I am in heaven.

The accessories are over priced tho. So I held off on buying the CAD$200 cover keyboard. And bought a nice 3rd party mechanical keyboard called Aula F75. It’s comical, the keyboard is probably twice the weight of the tablet in my backpack. But so long as I keep my bag free of unnecessary things it’s remains a day walk friendly bag. So I have.. finally.. a "Kindle" I wanted. >_____<

Officially, I wish I had bought a Kindle, and given Jeff Bezos’ dollar store thousands of dollars in exchange for hardly any right to read the books that I’ll never own. B/c every dollar invested into Jeff’s rocket fuel is one day sooner we’ll send the guy into the Sun. So in that regards I failed him.

  20. If you already own a kindle: you can jailbreak it and then load any epub, pdf and so on on there… it’s fairly straightforward

  21. I’ve been with Kindle since the beginning. However, this week I switched to Kobo Colour from my Oasis. Amazon seems to have lost interest in the Kindle. Dropping the Oasis was a big mistake. I’m very impressed with the Colour especially with the library integration.

  22. I only buy books from sellers who enable me to easily download and remove DRM, so I can move the books I purchased to any reader device I choose. When Amazon stopped allowing downloads from their web site without a Kindle device, I instantly stopped buying books from them.

  24. I’ve had two kindle paperwhites (older plus the 2024 version) and two Kobo’s (Aura H2O and the Libra). In my opinion the Kobo’s are far superior they’re more comfortable to hold, the reading experience is better and much more customisable. Only downside is the smaller library but there are ways around that 😜

  25. I use Kindle on my iPad with no issues. What’s the advantage of having a separate dedicated ereader machine?

  26. I too had a kindle but jumped ship as soon as they said you can’t save copies of your books. I’ve always been annoyed at being stuck in their ecosystem though as I speak another language and acquiring books for the kindle wasn’t an easy process! So I settled on a Boox Palma… I LOVE IT! I read a lot of fanfiction that I can now read on my Boox! I can have kobo, kindle, manga apps, aaannddd I can buy my European books from any online store and transfer them to my Boox as it supports a number of different formats! Bonus is that Boox Palma literally fits in the palm of my hand and is so nice to read from with its side buttons to switch pages and it has speakers so I can even listen to audiobooks from it or connect a Bluetooth headset. I have so much storage with a micro sd card and it’s another way to back up my books. It’s expensive but worth every Penny!

  27. I’ve just bought my first kindle (after thinking whether or not to buying one for about 10 years) and I’m waiting for it to be mailed to me. Believe me, if I had the opportunity to get a Kobo I would’ve bought one. In my country Kindles are more popular and therefore way cheaper than a Kobo or any alternative e-reader. Thinking of jailbreaking mine as soon as it arrives and hope that it lasts me as long as the older models have lasted for other people.

  28. I can’t find my comments bu the awakened and the sanctuary are by Sarah Elizabeth Santana.
They’re a little hard to find because they’re not popular books I guess and the cover did also change from the physical book.I have which I do like these a lot better

  29. I use the kindle app. I wish i had known about the download feature bewfpre it left. I have a LOT of books from Amazon. To know thst i could lose them because of licensing is horrifying.

I think they have become a monopoly because, authors use to have bookz with amazon and Barnes & Noble. Now they dont. Its not even a 3 or 6 month delay. They are not ther.

  30. Really good review. I’m also trying to divorce Amazon. I have Kindle, Kobo and BorrowBox (public library e-reader app) apps on my iPad. I’ve used them for years. I’m aware that Kindle and Kobo devices probably have better battery life than my iPad but I’ve enough devices to charge already. How we read is a very personal thing. There are books (Lord of the Rings) that feel better on paper and others (eg, by William Gibson) that are already part of the digital culture we live in – but partly predate it, oddly. Anyway, great video.

  31. Thanks for this, okay I will try the change myself. Been meaning to break away from Amazon for a while.

  32. Welcome to the world of Kobo! I’ve had the Kobo Mini since it came out in 2010ish and never looked back.

  33. I just started my reading journey and I use an iPad this is really a hassle like the specific novel I wanted wasn’t available anywhere.

  34. Bravo on your description I am sorry that you were very stressful with the Kendall situation but I’m glad that you got it all solved . Did you ever decide to go to Barnes & Noble and get a notebook because it’s $149 and you can read any books from Barnes & Noble so I don’t know if you checked that one out it is an android but it is from Barnes & Noble. I’m gonna get that one as well. I tried Amazon Kindle before. I’m not a big fan of it too much

  35. And here’s the kicker: after years of accumulation books on Kindle, I just can’t take those with me to another device. At the very least, I have to dual-wield… For years. Total bummer. Amazon really lost me with the latest changes, especially the inability to USB-transfer content. I don’t want their trash sync option, which re-uploads books that I’ve deleted, re-sets ones that I’ve read back to zero and just obliterates the order which I’ve established on the intro screen of my Oasis.

But this is absolutely the best option for an e-reader right now, hands down. Amazon has some great options, but I think things are about to change.

  36. Hi from the UK. 1984 and the Harry Potter books are still available on Amazon here in the UK. In the USA we hear of areas that are removing books from libraries and schools so do you think that Amazon are just following the trend? I have looked at the Kobo but it doesn’t have the wealth of books that are inexpensive. I’m sticking with Amazon. By the way there are 6 different Kindles for sale here but the Oasis isn”t one of them. Keep up the good work. Best wishes from England.
