How to get ALL ebooks & audiobooks free – even if your library sucks!

I have saved thousands of dollars by getting virtually all of my e-books and audiobooks for free from the library. Here is the guide to teach you how to do it too!

  1. The library extension is a game changer. My library unfortunately only allows you to check out a book for two weeks. If I can’t read the book in that amount of time I just put my Kindle on Airplane mode and the book will stay on my Kindle until I go on-line.

  2. Project Gutenburg allows you to get public domain books. Lots of classic books are punlic domain, like alice’s adventures in wonderland and 180 days around the world.

  3. Possibly one of the most helpful videos I’ve ever seen on You tube or anywhere else. Should be required watching for students in English classes all over the country!

  4. Hoopla works like Libby in that each individual library sets it’s own rules. I have Hoopla through two libraries and they have differing numbers of checkouts. They also DO have holds, although this might only be for Flex Borrows, and not all libraries have those (one of my libraries does and the other does not). Hoopla doesn’t allow for multiple libraries inside one login, as Libby does, but you can have multiple accounts using different logins for each. Along with e-books and audiobooks, Hoopla also has movies, television shows, music, graphic novels, and "Binge Pass." The Binge Pass option is available for different platforms, and it allows you to check out as much as you want from that particular platform but only for three days. One of my favorites is The Great Courses but they also have Hallmark+, Curiosity, Fret Zealot music lessons, and much more.

While I’ve never heard of this library extension app before, you really don’t need it. Just search in Libby. When what you’re looking for comes up, it will show you which libraries have it, which don’t, and how long your wait is at each library, if applicable. Using the extension is superfluous. Also, if it comes up in search showing a library that you don’t want to use (for instance, I have one library that’s 21 days and three that are 14 days for borrows), simply click on the library icon that came up and it will immediately show you the status in your other libraries as well. Click on the icon for the library you want to use and either check out or place a hold. This is particularly useful if you have a mix of libraries like I do and two are small and don’t carry much but the other two are pretty robust. If I see the book I want is at one of the smaller libraries, I usually choose that as it leaves a checkout available at my bigger libraries, where most of my reading comes from.

  5. Thanks for the video. I am waiting for my Kobo reader to arrive next week. I hope to do more reading than I currently do. I will take it a bit at a time. Maybe one day I will go beyond my current library to have access to more book and audiio books. But in the past I would borrow books and never finish them because I do not read that consistently. But I am hoping the Kobo E-Reader will change that. Thanks again for the informative and thoughtful video..

  6. Thanks for the useful tips! How can I get e-books for free? Like the sci-fi thriller Attack on Planet Falrus by Joanna Monigatti

  7. i added the extension and don’t get any results when searching for a book. i don’t see anything in the extension settings that doesn’t give full permissions.

  8. Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh $30/2yrs fee for out-of-state library card. You apply online. I had to use online chat to learn how to pay the fee after receiving my temp 30 day card via email.

  9. I can’t comprehend why a digital book needs to be limited so much. It’s just as easy to make infinite copies.
I didn’t even know digital libraries were a thing people used. I just get the pdf from Libgen

  10. Thanks Matt. This was a really informative and helpful video, especially because other creators tend to forget about us international viewers.

  11. This is awesome, especially as someone who isn’t a US citizen. The money will be worth it.
Before i started seeing alot of audiobooks around, i would always get the pdf or epub of the book from the bay and then use the play out loud feature ๐Ÿ˜‚. It was far from perfect but very usable and enjoyable and gave me all for free also.

  12. I d/l hoopla but it doesnโ€™t have an audio book category. Some stuff comes up under โ€œmusicโ€ but searches for titles I know my library has yielded no results. Am I missing something?

  13. Yeah if I was gonna get it for free anyways Iโ€™m not waiting Iโ€™ll just steal that shit fuck that

  14. Thank you for this interesting video. In Ontario, Canada, whereI live, in our local library we don’t have Libby, but we have Hoopla and Claud Library, including Claud Library News Stand.

  15. Sadly, while I can pay for the Orange County card, the site tells me that sending books to your Kindle is only available INSIDE the US. ๐Ÿ˜ข We DID have an excellent library system in the UK but 10 years of our last Tory government has totally decimated it. We can get audio books, however, which are great on Libby. Having extra titles available in Orange County is well worth the subscription fee compared to purchasing audible books.

  16. uhhhhh why am i just finding out about universal borrowing?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!! i’m telling everyone i meet

  17. I looked into Libby and it only lets you borrow books for 7 to 14 days. I’m a slow reader and I don’t have time to spend hours reading everyday. I takes me more than a week to read an average size book.

  18. Hi, I was hoping that your video would address my issue but sadly it did not. Here is my issue When libraries changed from Overdrive to Libby, they no longer allow you to download audible books to devices like my Shokz open Swim. I swim 100 laps a day and I listen to books while I swim. I was getting library books for free until libraries switched to Libby. I was told I can only download to my phone or ipad. So, I have been using Audible, which are not free and are not in MP3 format. I have to purchase the book, convert it to MP3 format using another app then download it to my Shokz Open Swim. I have gone to the library about this and was told it can’t be done with audio library books. I was hoping you could tell be where I can find free audiobooks that you can download to an MP3 player.

  19. I used my parents’ address to get a card for their library system. So I have two !libraries and want more!

  20. How did you get the other libraries in California to work, I got one in the county one over and Libby wonโ€™t let me borrow from them because Iโ€™m not a resident. If you could help with this I would appreciate it

  21. I am an author who spends about a year writing a novel. Just want to say โ€œThank youโ€ for stealing from meโ€ฆโ€ฆwhy would you want to avoid spending ยฃ3 on an ebook?

  22. thank you so much!! This is totally awsome for me as spmeone with severe depresion, as i truely enjoy reading but cant make my way to the library on my own! ๐Ÿ™‚ I just have one question though, are you able to read the Ebooks on your phone/laptop? I’ve rewatched the video and combed through the comments but I may just be missing the answer lol, thanks so much for the effort you put in to make this video! ๐Ÿ˜€
